Guidance

Know what to do before you need to

Practical dog first aid and walking advice, written from years on countryside paths in all weathers.

In an emergency
  1. Keep yourself safe first, and remember that a frightened dog may bite.
  2. Keep the airway clear, control bleeding, and keep your dog warm and still.
  3. Do not give food, water, or any human medicine.
  4. After providing first aid, consider whether you need to ring your vet, or the nearest out-of-hours practice, and say you are on your way.

Animal PoisonLine UK is a dedicated 24-hour emergency telephone service (chargeable) for pet owners worried about poisoning. Save this number and the number for your vet practice to your mobile today, so you have vital contact information when needed in an emergency.

Please note

This guidance is general information from an experienced dog walker, not veterinary advice. It never replaces a consultation with a qualified vet.
